Which personal-computer business did Lenovo acquire from IBM in 2005?
Answer
IBM's PC division
Answer
IBM's PC division
Lenovo acquired IBM's personal-computer business in 2005.
IBM had helped establish the modern business-PC market with the IBM Personal Computer, introduced in 1981. By the early 2000s, however, IBM was emphasizing services and enterprise technology rather than manufacturing mass-market personal computers.
Lenovo announced the acquisition in December 2004, and it closed in May 2005. The purchase included the ThinkPad laptop line, which became a flagship Lenovo brand, along with other PC operations. Lenovo did not acquire all of IBM: IBM retained its mainframe, software, services, and many other businesses. The deal also made Lenovo the world's third-largest PC supplier at the time.
