Which performer closed the 1969 Woodstock festival?

The story behind the answer

Jimi Hendrix closed the 1969 Woodstock festival.

Hendrix performed after sunrise on Monday, August 18, 1969, ending the festival’s live music program. His set included a famous electric-guitar interpretation of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which became one of the most recognizable performances associated with Woodstock.

Because severe delays pushed the schedule far behind, many members of the audience had already left by the time Hendrix appeared. He nevertheless played to a large remaining crowd, accompanied by a new backing group that was then billed as Gypsy Sun and Rainbows.

Some people remember Hendrix as the festival’s opening or headline act because his performance dominates film and recordings. He was actually the final performer, while Richie Havens opened the festival on Friday afternoon.
