Which Pepsi cola, introduced in 1988, added cherry flavor to the brand’s lineup?

The story behind the answer

Wild Cherry Pepsi was the Pepsi cola introduced in 1988 with cherry flavor.

The product extended Pepsi’s standard cola range by adding a fruit flavor while retaining the brand’s familiar cola base. It was originally marketed as Wild Cherry Pepsi and later commonly appeared under the shorter name Pepsi Wild Cherry. The drink became one of Pepsi’s best-known flavored cola variants.

Cherry cola was not unique to Pepsi; other soft-drink companies had also sold cherry-flavored colas. That makes the product easy to confuse with Coca-Cola Cherry, which belongs to the competing Coca-Cola brand. Pepsi’s version, however, dates to 1988.

Other Pepsi variants followed different paths. Crystal Pepsi was a clear cola, Pepsi Vanilla emphasized vanilla flavor, and Pepsi Max was a separate reduced-sugar cola brand in many markets. Those products are not the answer to this question.
