Which penguin species has a narrow black band beneath its chin?

The story behind the answer

The chinstrap penguin has a narrow black band beneath its chin.

This distinctive marking runs across the throat and gives the species its common English name. Chinstrap penguins also have a white face and throat, a black back, and pinkish feet. Their appearance can help observers distinguish them from closely related penguins in the genus Pygoscelis.

Chinstrap penguins breed on Antarctic and sub-Antarctic islands, often forming large colonies on rocky slopes. Their diet commonly includes krill, although they may also take fish and other small marine animals.

The black line should not be confused with the dark head markings of macaroni or rockhopper penguins. Chinstrap penguins are also separate from Adélie and gentoo penguins, even though all three belong to the same genus. The facial band is the clearest field mark.
