Which penguin species has a distinctive yellow crest and black throat?

The story behind the answer

The macaroni penguin has a distinctive yellow crest and black throat.

Its bright orange-yellow crest feathers extend from the forehead and sides of the head, contrasting with a black face and throat. The species is one of the crested penguins, a group that also includes rockhoppers, royal penguins, and several other southern species.

Macaroni penguins breed on sub-Antarctic and Antarctic islands, including South Georgia, the South Shetland Islands, and the Crozet Islands. They feed mainly at sea on krill, fish, and squid, and large colonies can contain many thousands of breeding pairs.

The name “macaroni” comes from an eighteenth-century expression for fashionable dress: English sailors compared the penguin’s conspicuous crest with the “macaroni” style. The bird is often confused with the royal penguin, whose face is largely white rather than black.
