Visa held its 2008 initial public offering under the ticker V.
Visa went public on the New York Stock Exchange in March 2008. The offering raised about US$17.9 billion, making it the largest U.S. IPO at that time. Visa’s shares trade under the single-letter ticker V, while the company operates a global electronic-payments network.
Visa generally does not issue cards directly to consumers. Banks and other financial institutions issue Visa-branded cards, and Visa’s network helps authorize, clear, and settle transactions between merchants and financial institutions. This network-based model differs from a traditional bank that lends directly to cardholders.
Mastercard is Visa’s closest major network competitor, but it is a separate public company with the ticker MA. American Express combines a payments network with card issuance and lending, while PayPal operates primarily as a digital-payments platform. Visa’s market capitalization reflects investor expectations about payment volumes, fees, competition, and economic conditions.
