Chris Pratt was the “Parks and Recreation” cast member originally intended as a guest star who became a regular cast member.
Pratt played Andy Dwyer, the lovable but immature musician who begins the series as Ann Perkins’s boyfriend. Andy was initially planned to appear only during the first season, but producers enjoyed Pratt’s performance and quickly decided to keep him as part of the main ensemble.
Andy became one of the show’s most memorable characters. His band, Mouse Rat, his alter ego Burt Macklin, and his friendship with April Ludgate all became recurring parts of the series. Pratt was credited as a guest star during season one and was promoted to the main cast beginning with season two.
A common mix-up is confusing Andy’s original limited role with Pratt’s later status on the show. Although he eventually became central to “Parks and Recreation,” that was not the initial plan. The role’s success also helped Pratt transition from television comedy into major film roles such as Star-Lord in “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
