Alphabet replaced Google as the listed corporate name in 2015.
Google announced the creation of Alphabet Inc. in August 2015, and the corporate restructuring took effect later that year. Alphabet became the holding company, while Google became its largest subsidiary and continued operating its search, advertising, Android, and YouTube businesses.
The change separated Google’s core internet products from projects such as life sciences, self-driving technology, and investment activities. Alphabet’s structure allowed those businesses to have more independent leadership and reporting while keeping them under one parent company.
Google’s stock did not disappear from the market. Existing Google shareholders received Alphabet shares, and the company’s public stock continued under the familiar GOOG and GOOGL tickers. A common mistake is saying Alphabet is merely a renamed search engine; it is the parent corporation that owns Google and several other businesses.
