Which painting by Gustav Klimt is an iconic Art Nouveau work featuring a couple embracing?

The story behind the answer

Gustav Klimt’s painting featuring a couple embracing is The Kiss.

Klimt painted The Kiss in 1907–1908 during his celebrated Golden Period. The oil painting incorporates gold leaf, silver, and platinum, giving the embracing couple and their patterned robes a luminous, almost mosaic-like appearance. It is now displayed at the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna.

The work is strongly associated with the Vienna Secession, Austria’s distinctive version of the wider Art Nouveau movement. Its decorative patterns combine geometric motifs on the man’s robe with floral and curved forms on the woman’s clothing, linking the painting to both modern design and natural ornament.

The painting was exhibited in 1908 under the title Liebespaar, meaning “The Lovers.” Although often described simply as an Art Nouveau masterpiece, Klimt’s style also draws on Symbolism, Byzantine art, and the decorative arts. The alternatives are famous paintings, but none depicts Klimt’s iconic embracing pair.
