Which Belgian architect designed the Hôtel van Eetvelde in Brussels?

The story behind the answer

Victor Horta designed the Hôtel van Eetvelde in Brussels.

Horta designed the townhouse for Edmond van Eetvelde, an administrator of the Congo Free State. Construction began in 1895, and the principal house was completed in the late 1890s; Horta also designed extensions added between 1898 and 1901.

The building is celebrated for its inventive Art Nouveau treatment of domestic space. Its plan, ironwork, stained glass, mosaics, and flowing decorative lines create a unified interior rather than treating ornament as a surface applied afterward. A prominent glass-and-metal structure helps bring light into the central circulation spaces.

Hôtel van Eetvelde is one of several Brussels townhouses that established Horta’s reputation as a leading Art Nouveau architect. It became part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2000 alongside Horta’s own house and workshop and other Horta residences. The other listed names are Belgian Art Nouveau figures, but none designed this house.
