Which Oxford college was C.S. Lewis’s main academic home?

The story behind the answer

Magdalen College was C.S. Lewis’s main academic home at Oxford.

Lewis became a fellow and tutor of Magdalen College in 1925 and remained there until 1954. The college is one of Oxford’s historic institutions, founded in the fifteenth century and known for its tower, cloisters, and extensive grounds beside the River Cherwell.

During his years at Magdalen, Lewis taught English literature and developed the scholarly and literary work that made him internationally famous. He also hosted or participated in conversations with fellow writers and academics, including members of the Inklings.

Lewis’s association with Magdalen is distinct from his later position at Magdalene College, Cambridge. The Oxford college is spelled Magdalen, without a final “e,” while the Cambridge institution is Magdalene, with an “e.” That similar spelling is a frequent source of mix-ups.
