Which Oxford college employed C.S. Lewis as a tutor in English literature for many years?
Answer
Magdalen College
Answer
Magdalen College
Magdalen College employed C.S. Lewis as a tutor in English literature for many years.
Lewis was elected a fellow and tutor of Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1925. He taught English literature there for nearly three decades, remaining at Magdalen until 1954. His Oxford academic work included teaching medieval and Renaissance literature, fields that informed both his scholarship and his imaginative writing.
Magdalen College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. Lewis’s rooms were associated with the college’s New Buildings, and he participated in the college’s academic and social life while also becoming a prominent Christian broadcaster and author.
Lewis’s later academic appointment was at Magdalene College, Cambridge, beginning in 1954. The names are easy to confuse: Oxford has Magdalen College, while Cambridge has Magdalene College. The Oxford college also differs from Balliol and Christ Church, two other well-known colleges often mentioned in accounts of Oxford literary history.
