Which Oxford college did J.R.R. Tolkien join as a student in 1911?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien joined Exeter College, Oxford, as a student in 1911.

Tolkien entered Exeter College in 1911 to study Classics. He later changed his academic focus to English Language and Literature, a decision that aligned with his lifelong interest in historical languages and medieval texts. Exeter was therefore an important setting in the formation of his scholarly career.

After university, Tolkien served in the British Army during the First World War. His wartime experiences and the loss of close friends influenced his outlook, although his fiction should not be reduced to a direct autobiography of the conflict.

Tolkien’s later Oxford teaching appointments were connected with other parts of the university, including Pembroke College and Merton College. Those later associations can cause confusion with Exeter, the college where he began his undergraduate studies.
