Taylor Swift performed “cardigan” with “august” at the 2021 Grammy Awards.
Swift’s performance at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards presented a sequence built around Folklore and related material. She began with “cardigan,” performed “august” inside a cottage setting, and concluded with “willow.” Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner accompanied her, marking their first performance together as a trio.
The song order reflected the album’s woodland and storybook visual world. It also highlighted Swift’s move toward fictional narrative songwriting during the Folklore era. “cardigan” is especially relevant because it is one of the two other songs in the same James-Betty-Augustine storyline.
A common mix-up is choosing “betty,” since it is the third song in the love-triangle trilogy. However, the Grammy performance sequence paired “august” with “cardigan” and “willow,” not “betty.”
