Which organization runs The Open Championship?
Answer
The R&A
Answer
The R&A
The R&A runs The Open Championship. Its championships arm organizes the tournament, while the wider R&A group also governs golf and helps administer the sport’s rules outside the United States and Mexico.
The organization developed from the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, whose influence over golf grew alongside The Open. In 2004, the club separated its governance and tournament-organization functions into the modern R&A group, allowing the historic club to return to private-membership status.
The R&A’s championships division conducts The Open as one of golf’s four men’s majors. The event is played on a rotating group of links courses in the United Kingdom, including St Andrews’ Old Course, Royal St George’s and Royal Liverpool.
The PGA Tour is a tour on which The Open is an official event, not the tournament’s organizer. The USGA runs the U.S. Open, and Augusta National hosts and organizes the Masters. The R&A is therefore the canonical answer for this question.
