Which organization recruits Gru in Despicable Me 2?

The story behind the answer

The Anti-Villain League recruits Gru in Despicable Me 2. The AVL is a government-backed organization that investigates dangerous supervillains and works to stop threats that conventional authorities cannot handle.

At the beginning of the film, AVL director Silas Ramsbottom sends agent Lucy Wilde to bring Gru into the investigation. A powerful mutagen called PX-41 has been stolen from an Arctic laboratory, and the organization believes Gru's experience as a former supervillain can help identify the culprit.

Gru initially resists because he has retired from villainy and is focused on raising Margo, Edith, and Agnes while running a jam business. He is eventually partnered with Lucy and assigned a cover operation at a shopping mall. Their investigation leads them toward Eduardo Pérez, who is secretly the villain El Macho.

The Anti-Villain League is sometimes confused with the Vicious 6, a villain team introduced in Minions: The Rise of Gru. The AVL opposes villains; the Vicious 6 is a criminal group. Gru later works with the AVL again, although his relationship with the organization changes across the series.
