The Energy Institute publishes the annual Statistical Review of World Energy, formerly produced by BP.
The Energy Institute is a professional membership organization for the global energy sector. In 2023, it took over publication of the Statistical Review of World Energy, a widely used reference covering oil, natural gas, coal, renewables, electricity, and other energy data.
For decades, the publication was commonly known as the BP Statistical Review of World Energy. The change in publisher did not turn it into an OPEC or government report; it remains an industry reference compiled and presented by the Energy Institute.
Researchers and journalists use the review to compare production, consumption, reserves, trade, and emissions across countries and regions. A frequent mix-up is confusing the Statistical Review with the International Energy Agency’s World Energy Outlook. Both are influential, but they are different publications with different methods, purposes, and publication histories.
