Which organization founded the Indian Premier League in 2007?

The story behind the answer

The Board of Control for Cricket in India, or BCCI, founded the Indian Premier League in 2007.

The BCCI formally launched the IPL on 13 September 2007, presenting it as an annual franchise-based Twenty20 competition. BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi led much of the initiative, including the tournament’s format, franchise model, prize money and squad rules. The first season was then played in April and May 2008.

A common mix-up is to credit the International Cricket Council, Cricket Australia or England’s ECB. Those bodies govern or administer cricket in their own spheres, but the IPL is an Indian domestic league created and operated under the BCCI. The league emerged during a period of rapid interest in short-form cricket, shortly after India won the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in 2007.
