Which organization elected Nelson Mandela as its president in 1991?

The story behind the answer

The African National Congress elected Nelson Mandela as its president in 1991.

Mandela took over the ANC presidency from Oliver Tambo at the organization’s 48th National Conference in Durban in July 1991. Tambo had led the ANC in exile for many years, while Mandela had become the movement’s most prominent public figure after his release from prison in February 1990.

As ANC president, Mandela led negotiations with President F. W. de Klerk’s government to dismantle apartheid and establish democratic elections. The talks were difficult and were interrupted by violence, political disputes, and disagreements over constitutional arrangements. Nevertheless, they produced the framework for South Africa’s first universal democratic election in 1994.

Mandela later became South Africa’s president, but the ANC presidency and the national presidency were different offices. Another frequent confusion is the date: Mandela became ANC president in 1991, before he became the country’s president in 1994.
