Which organization did the UFC acquire in 2007?

The story behind the answer

The UFC acquired PRIDE Fighting Championships in 2007.

Zuffa, the UFC’s parent company at the time, purchased PRIDE’s assets in March 2007. PRIDE had been one of the world’s leading mixed martial arts promotions, staging major events in Japan and featuring stars such as Fedor Emelianenko, Wanderlei Silva and Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira.

The acquisition brought parts of PRIDE’s fighter roster and video library into the Zuffa business. Several notable PRIDE fighters later competed in the UFC, helping create cross-promotional matchups that fans had wanted for years.

PRIDE’s Japanese operations did not simply continue as a second UFC brand. The organization eventually ceased regular operations, while the UFC remained Zuffa’s primary global promotion. The acquisition is therefore different from the UFC’s later purchases of organizations such as Strikeforce and the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion.
