Which organization did Afrika Bambaataa establish in the Bronx in 1973?
Answer
Universal Zulu Nation
Answer
Universal Zulu Nation
Afrika Bambaataa established the Universal Zulu Nation in the Bronx in 1973.
The organization grew out of the Bronx street-gang environment and promoted hip hop culture, community unity, and creative alternatives to violence. Bambaataa, born Kevin Donovan, developed his public identity partly through his work with the Black Spades before turning toward DJing and cultural organizing.
The Zulu Nation embraced the elements commonly associated with early hip hop culture: DJing, MCing, breakdancing, and graffiti writing. It also promoted knowledge and social awareness as an important fifth element in some formulations.
The organization is sometimes confused with Native Tongues, a later collective involving groups such as De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and Jungle Brothers. The Universal Zulu Nation was founded by Bambaataa in the Bronx in 1973 and predates Native Tongues.
