Which organization coined the term “Cyber Monday” in 2005?

The story behind the answer

Shop.org coined the term “Cyber Monday” in 2005.

Shop.org, an online retail trade association, used the expression to describe the Monday after the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend. The term was promoted after retailers and researchers observed that many people returned to work after the holiday weekend and used faster workplace internet connections to shop online.

The first Cyber Monday was November 28, 2005. The concept complemented Black Friday, which traditionally emphasized physical-store shopping, by giving online retail its own named promotional day. Over time, the event spread beyond the United States and became part of the global retail calendar.

Shop.org was affiliated with the National Retail Federation, which is why the two names are sometimes treated as interchangeable. The specific organization credited with coining the term, however, is Shop.org. Cyber Monday is also distinct from Singles’ Day, an unrelated shopping event popularized in China.
