Timberline Lodge provided the exterior inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.
The Timberline Lodge is a historic mountain resort on the southern slope of Mount Hood in Oregon. Kubrick’s production photographed its distinctive exterior for use as the fictional Overlook Hotel, while most of the interior scenes were created on studio sets in England.
The lodge was commissioned during the Great Depression as a Works Progress Administration project and was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937. Its design combines rustic architectural elements with extensive hand-crafted decoration.
A common mix-up is the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, which inspired Stephen King’s novel but did not provide the main exterior seen in Kubrick’s film. The Overlook’s interiors, including the famous corridors and hedge maze, were substantially different from Timberline Lodge.
