Mercado Libre became the first company from Latin America to join the NASDAQ-100 index.
Mercado Libre is an Argentine-founded e-commerce and financial-technology company serving markets across Latin America. Its marketplace connects buyers and sellers, while related businesses such as Mercado Pago, Mercado Envíos, and Mercado Crédito support payments, logistics, and financing.
The NASDAQ-100 tracks many of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange. Mercado Libre’s inclusion reflected the company’s scale and the growing international importance of Latin American digital commerce. It also showed that the region’s technology sector extended beyond financial services and telecommunications.
Mercado Libre’s index milestone is distinct from its stock-market listing. The company went public on Nasdaq in 2007, while joining an index is a later decision based on eligibility and market data. Companies such as Nubank and StoneCo are also major Latin American technology businesses, but they are not the answer to this milestone.
