Malik announced his departure on 25 March 2015, during One Direction’s worldwide success after four studio albums. He said he wanted to be a normal 22-year-old and have private time away from the public spotlight. The remaining four members continued the scheduled tour and later released Made in the A.M. in 2015.

Malik’s exit is sometimes confused with the group’s later hiatus. One Direction announced an extended hiatus in 2015, but that was a group decision after Malik had already departed. Malik subsequently began a solo career, releasing his debut album Mind of Mine in 2016.

He was known in One Direction for his prominent high-register vocals and became the first member to leave the original five-person lineup.
