Völuspá is the Old Norse poem that gives the fullest poetic account of Ragnarok.
The title means “Prophecy of the Seeress.” In the poem, a seeress addresses Odin and describes the history of the cosmos, the gods’ fate, the coming catastrophe, and the world’s renewal. Its vision includes the death of major gods, the burning of the world, and the emergence of a restored earth.
Völuspá is preserved in two principal medieval manuscript traditions: the Codex Regius and the Hauksbók. It is part of the Poetic Edda, a collection of mythological and heroic poems written down in medieval Iceland. Prose Edda by Snorri Sturluson also recounts Ragnarok, but Völuspá is the key poetic source.
