Which O’Keeffe painting sold for about $44.4 million at auction in 2014?

The story behind the answer

Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 sold for about $44.4 million at auction in 2014.

O'Keeffe painted Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 in 1932. It shows a large white jimson weed flower against a pale background, using close-up scale to make a single blossom fill much of the composition. The painting was sold at Sotheby’s New York in November 2014 for $44,405,000.

That price established a record for a work by a female artist at auction at the time. It also drew attention to the continuing market and museum interest in O'Keeffe’s paintings. Later auction results by other women artists eventually exceeded the mark, so the record should be understood as historical rather than permanent.

The painting is sometimes confused with O'Keeffe’s many other enlarged flower pictures, including Black Iris III and Red Canna. Its identifying features are the white jimson weed blossom, the 1932 date, and the unusually high 2014 sale price.
