Answer
Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1
Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 became the first work by a female artist to sell for more than $40 million at auction.
Georgia O'Keeffe painted Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 in 1932. The large canvas depicts a single white jimson weed flower against a dark background, magnifying the plant so that its trumpet-shaped bloom dominates the composition.
At a Sotheby’s auction in New York in November 2014, the painting sold for $44.4 million, including the buyer’s premium. That price made it the most expensive artwork by a female artist sold at auction at the time and the first to pass the $40 million mark.
The painting had belonged to the Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation and was sold to benefit the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. It is not the same work as O'Keeffe’s 1920s paintings titled Black Iris or Oriental Poppies. The record also refers specifically to an auction result, not to every private sale or overall market valuation.
