Which oil field is Kuwait’s largest and one of the world’s largest oil fields?

The story behind the answer

The Burgan field is Kuwait’s largest oil field and one of the world’s largest oil fields.

Greater Burgan lies in southeastern Kuwait and consists principally of the Burgan, Magwa, and Ahmadi structures. Oil was discovered there in 1938, although commercial production was delayed by the Second World War and began in 1946.

The field’s vast sandstone reservoir made Kuwait a major petroleum producer. Its oil is generally described as relatively light compared with some heavier crude grades, though it is not identical to every crude marketed under Kuwait’s name.

Burgan is sometimes called the world’s second-largest oil field after Saudi Arabia’s Ghawar. The comparison depends on whether rankings use original oil in place, recoverable reserves, or production capacity, but Burgan is consistently listed among the largest.
