Which offshore wind farm, opened in 1991, was the world's first commercial offshore wind farm?
Answer
Vindeby Offshore Wind Farm
Answer
Vindeby Offshore Wind Farm
Vindeby Offshore Wind Farm, opened in 1991, was the world's first commercial offshore wind farm.
Built off the Danish island of Lolland, Vindeby consisted of 11 small Bonus wind turbines. Each turbine had a capacity of 450 kilowatts, giving the project a total capacity of 4.95 megawatts. The turbines stood in shallow water close to shore, making the site a practical demonstration of offshore wind generation.
Vindeby was developed by the Danish utility Elkraft and helped establish Denmark as an early leader in offshore wind technology. The project operated for 25 years before being dismantled in 2017. Its turbines were tiny compared with modern offshore machines, which can individually exceed 15 megawatts.
Vindeby is sometimes confused with later Danish projects such as Middelgrunden, which became famous for its distinctive curved layout. Vindeby's importance is historical: it proved that wind turbines could operate commercially at sea, not that it was the largest or most powerful offshore farm.
