Which official did Genghis Khan appoint as chief judge of the empire?
Answer
Shigi Qutuqu
Answer
Shigi Qutuqu
The official Genghis Khan appointed to oversee the empire’s judicial affairs was Shigi Qutuqu.
Shigi Qutuqu was a foundling brought into Temujin’s household and later regarded as an adopted brother. He became one of the first prominent Mongol officials able to read and write, making him especially valuable as the new empire developed legal and administrative institutions.
At the great assembly of 1206, the Secret History of the Mongols portrays Genghis Khan entrusting him with legal jurisdiction and ordering him to record judgments and punish wrongdoing. Shigi Qutuqu is therefore often described in trivia references as the empire’s chief judge, although historians caution that the chronicle may exaggerate the extent or timing of his authority.
He also supervised the accounting of treasure taken from Zhongdu in 1215 and later helped administer a census in northern China. Tata-tonga was associated with writing and Uyghur script, while Yelü Chucai was a major Chinese adviser; neither is the answer to this judicial appointment.
