Which of the Four Symbols represents the north in Taoist cosmology?

The story behind the answer

In Taoist cosmology, the Four Symbols’ representative of the north is the Black Tortoise.

The Black Tortoise, also called the Black Warrior or Black Tortoise-Snake, is one of four mythological guardians associated with the cardinal directions. It governs the north, while the Azure Dragon guards the east, the Vermilion Bird the south, and the White Tiger the west.

These creatures are connected with groups of stars in ancient Chinese astronomy. The Black Tortoise is associated with the northern sky and traditionally linked to winter, the water element, and ideas of endurance and protection. Its combined tortoise-and-snake form reflects a distinctive mythological image rather than an ordinary animal species.

A common mix-up is to call the four creatures the “Chinese zodiac.” They are different systems: the zodiac consists of twelve animals, whereas the Four Symbols organize constellations and sacred directions. Another wording variation is “Black Warrior,” a translation of the Chinese name Xuánwǔ; “Black Tortoise” remains the most familiar English answer.
