Which of J.R.R. Tolkien’s sons edited and published The Silmarillion in 1977?

The story behind the answer

Christopher Tolkien edited and published The Silmarillion in 1977.

J.R.R. Tolkien left extensive manuscripts describing the creation, histories, and languages of his fictional world. After Tolkien’s death in 1973, his son Christopher organized, edited, and sometimes reconstructed this material for publication. The Silmarillion appeared in 1977, four years after J.R.R. Tolkien’s death.

The book presents mythology and history from the creation of Eä through the First Age and later events. It is not a conventional novel like The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings; much of it reads as mythic history, legend, or chronicle. Christopher Tolkien continued editing his father’s unpublished writings, including the twelve-volume History of Middle-earth, making him central to the preservation and publication of Tolkien’s legendarium.
