Which of Jane Austen's novels was published in 1811?

Sense and Sensibility was the Jane Austen novel published in 1811. It was Austen’s first published novel and appeared anonymously under the author credit “A Lady.”

The book was issued in three volumes by Thomas Egerton in London, with the first edition dated 30 October 1811. Austen had originally drafted it as an epistolary novel before revising it into prose. Its central characters are the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, whose contrasting approaches to judgment and emotion give the novel its title.

The 1811 publication date can cause confusion because Austen’s novels followed one another unevenly. Pride and Prejudice appeared in 1813, Mansfield Park in 1814, Emma in 1815, and Persuasion and Northanger Abbey were published posthumously in 1817. Sense and Sensibility also had a strong early reception: all 750 copies of its first edition had sold by July 1813.
