Austen uses Catherine’s mistakes to satirize Gothic conventions while also presenting a coming-of-age story. Catherine initially suspects that the imposing General Tilney may have committed a terrible crime, but her supernatural-style fears prove unfounded. She must learn to distinguish literary fantasy from everyday reality.

Northanger Abbey was completed around 1798–1799, sold under the working title Susan in 1803, and published posthumously in 1817, with a title page dated 1818. Catherine is sometimes confused with Austen heroines such as Emma Woodhouse or Fanny Price, but those characters belong to different novels.
