Which ocean is the largest and deepest of Earth's five named oceans?
Answer
Pacific Ocean
Answer
Pacific Ocean
The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest of Earth's five named oceans.
It stretches from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south, lying between Asia and Australia on one side and the Americas on the other. Its name comes from the Latin pacificus, meaning peaceful, chosen by Ferdinand Magellan after calmer conditions in part of his voyage.
The Pacific covers about 165.25 million square kilometres, making it larger than all of Earth's land area combined. It also contains the Mariana Trench, whose deepest known point, Challenger Deep, reaches nearly 11,000 metres below sea level.
The Pacific includes thousands of islands and is surrounded by the seismically active Ring of Fire. The Atlantic Ocean is the second-largest, while the Indian Ocean is the third-largest.
