Which ocean contains the Azores archipelago?
Answer
Atlantic Ocean
Answer
Atlantic Ocean
The Azores archipelago lies in the Atlantic Ocean, specifically in the North Atlantic.
The Azores are a Portuguese autonomous region made up of nine principal volcanic islands and smaller islets. They stretch across the ocean roughly 1,400 kilometres west of mainland Portugal, forming part of Macaronesia, a region that also includes Madeira, the Canary Islands and Cape Verde.
The islands formed through volcanic activity around the Azores Plateau, where the North American, Eurasian and Nubian tectonic plates meet. Pico, on Pico Island, is Portugal’s highest mountain and rises to 2,351 metres above sea level. São Miguel is the largest and most populous island.
The main islands are arranged in western, central and eastern groups. Their Atlantic setting has shaped their climate, seafaring history and strategic importance. A frequent mistake is placing the Azores in the Pacific because of their volcanic character; unlike Hawaii, they are an Atlantic island chain.
