Answer
All the King's Men
Answer
All the King's Men
The novel that won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and is about a Southern politician was All the King's Men.
Robert Penn Warren's 1946 novel follows Willie Stark, a charismatic and increasingly authoritarian populist who rises to become governor in the American South. The story is narrated by Jack Burden, a political reporter who becomes Stark's aide. Their intertwined lives allow Warren to examine ambition, corruption, idealism, loyalty, and the moral costs of political power.
Willie Stark was inspired in part by Huey Long, the real-life Louisiana governor and U.S. senator who was assassinated in 1935, although the novel is not a simple biography. The title comes from the nursery rhyme about Humpty Dumpty. The book won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize, and its 1949 film adaptation won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It is often confused with All the President's Men, a nonfiction book about the Watergate investigation.
