Now in November
Answer
Now in November
The 1934 novel by Josephine Winslow Johnson that won the 1935 Pulitzer Prize for the Novel was Now in November.
Johnson’s debut follows a farming family through a year of economic hardship, environmental strain, and emotional crisis. The story is narrated by Marget, one of three sisters, and presents rural life from inside a household struggling with debt, unreliable harvests, and the pressures associated with the Great Depression and Dust Bowl era.
The title can be confused with other early Pulitzer winners about rural America. Lamb in His Bosom won the 1934 prize, while Honey in the Horn won in 1936; neither was Johnson’s book. Years of Grace was Margaret Ayer Barnes’s 1931 Pulitzer-winning novel.
Johnson was only 24 when she won, making her the youngest Pulitzer fiction winner at the time and often identified as the youngest ever. The Novel category was renamed Fiction in 1947, so older records use the earlier title.
