Which novel was J.K. Rowling’s first book about private detective Cormoran Strike?

The story behind the answer

The Cuckoo’s Calling was J.K. Rowling’s first novel about private detective Cormoran Strike.

Published in 2013 under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, the novel follows Strike as he investigates the death of model Lula Landry. The case begins after Landry’s brother questions the official conclusion that she died by suicide.

Cormoran Strike is a former Royal Military Police investigator who has left the army after losing part of a leg in Afghanistan. He operates a struggling detective agency in London. Robin Ellacott joins him as a temporary secretary, and their professional relationship develops across the series.

The later Strike novels are The Silkworm, Career of Evil, Lethal White, Troubled Blood, The Ink Black Heart, and The Running Grave. The novel’s initial Robert Galbraith attribution was later revealed to be Rowling’s pseudonym.
