Which novel is the seventh and final published book in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series?

The story behind the answer

The Last Battle is the seventh and final published novel in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia.

Published in 1956, the book concludes the main Narnian storyline with a conflict involving deception, the false Aslan, and the destruction of the world of Narnia. Lewis dedicated the novel to his stepson, Douglas Gresham. It won the Carnegie Medal in 1957, one of the most important British prizes for children’s literature.

The series has two commonly discussed reading orders. The original publication order begins with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and ends with The Last Battle. Some later editions use an internal chronological order, placing The Magician’s Nephew first because its events occur earlier in Narnian history. That difference can make the numbering seem confusing, but The Last Battle remains the final book in either the publication sequence or the internal chronology.

The title echoes the book’s apocalyptic scale and its role as Lewis’s ending for the series.
