Which novel by Mary Shelley features the creature created by Victor Frankenstein?

The story behind the answer

Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein features the creature created by Victor Frankenstein. Its full title is Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, and it follows Victor, a young scientist who assembles a living being from human body parts.

The novel was first published anonymously in 1818 and is usually described as a Gothic novel, though its scientific experiment and questions about technological ambition also helped make it an early science-fiction landmark. Shelley developed the idea during the famous 1816 writing challenge at Lake Geneva, where she was staying with Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, and others.

A major common mix-up concerns the name “Frankenstein.” Victor Frankenstein is the creator; Shelley’s creature is never given a personal name and is called “the creature,” “fiend,” or similar terms in the novel. The Vampyre, Dracula, and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are different works from the Gothic tradition, by John Polidori, Bram Stoker, and Robert Louis Stevenson respectively.
