Which novel by Humphrey Cobb was adapted into Stanley Kubrick’s Paths of Glory?

The story behind the answer

Stanley Kubrick’s Paths of Glory was adapted from Humphrey Cobb’s novel Paths of Glory.

Cobb’s 1935 antiwar novel concerns French soldiers during the First World War and the military injustice that follows a failed attack. Kubrick and screenwriters Calder Willingham and Jim Thompson adapted the story for the 1957 film.

The film follows Colonel Dax as he defends soldiers selected as scapegoats after an unsuccessful assault. Kirk Douglas played Dax, whose legal and moral opposition exposes the gap between military authority and justice.

The novel and film share their title, which can make the answer seem obvious, but the important distinction is that Cobb wrote the source novel while Kubrick directed the adaptation. The film was controversial in France and was not publicly screened there for many years.
