Trondheim is the Norwegian city home to Nidaros Cathedral, traditionally built over Saint Olav’s grave.
Construction of the cathedral began in the 11th century at the burial site of King Olav II Haraldsson, who became Norway’s patron saint. The church developed into an important pilgrimage destination and the medieval religious center of Norway.
Nidaros Cathedral has been rebuilt and restored repeatedly after fires and other damage. Its architecture combines Romanesque and Gothic elements, including an elaborate western façade decorated with sculptures. Trondheim was called Nidaros during the medieval period, which explains the cathedral’s name and its close association with Norway’s early Christian history.
