Which Norwegian city is home to Nidaros Cathedral, the traditional coronation church of Norway?

The story behind the answer

Trondheim is the Norwegian city home to Nidaros Cathedral, the traditional coronation church of Norway.

The cathedral stands over the presumed burial place of King Olav II, also known as Saint Olav, who died at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030. His shrine helped make Nidaros, the medieval name for Trondheim, an important pilgrimage destination in northern Europe.

Construction began in 1070, and the building developed over several centuries in Romanesque and Gothic styles. Nidaros Cathedral is Norway’s largest medieval church and remains the cathedral of the Diocese of Nidaros.

It is sometimes confused with Oslo Cathedral, which is the main church of the Diocese of Oslo. Nidaros Cathedral is especially associated with Norway’s medieval royal history and the annual Saint Olav celebrations.
