Which nonprofit organization created Mozilla Firefox?

The story behind the answer

The Mozilla Foundation created and stewards the Mozilla project behind Mozilla Firefox.

Firefox grew out of the Mozilla open-source community, which began at Netscape in 1998. When Netscape and its parent company AOL reduced their involvement, the Mozilla Foundation was established on July 15, 2003, to provide the project with independent nonprofit leadership. The Foundation supports Mozilla’s mission, sets project policies and controls important trademarks and copyrights.

Firefox itself began in 2002 under the codename Phoenix as a standalone browser project. It was designed by members of the Mozilla community who wanted a lighter alternative to the larger Mozilla Application Suite. After several naming changes, Firefox 1.0 was released on November 9, 2004.

The Mozilla Foundation is the canonical nonprofit answer, although Firefox’s development is broader than one organization: contributors worldwide participate, and the Mozilla Corporation, a taxable subsidiary created in 2005, coordinates much of the product’s development and release work. The Linux, Free Software and Apache foundations did not create Firefox.
