Elon Musk co-founded the nonprofit artificial-intelligence research company OpenAI in 2015.
OpenAI was announced in December 2015 by a group that included Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, John Schulman, and Wojciech Zaremba. Its original structure was a nonprofit research organization intended to promote broadly beneficial artificial intelligence.
OpenAI later created a for-profit subsidiary with a capped-profit structure and developed systems including GPT models and ChatGPT. Musk resigned from OpenAI’s board in 2018. It is easy to confuse OpenAI with Neuralink, which Musk co-founded in 2016 to work on brain–computer interfaces; the two organizations have different missions.
