Kirby's Dream Land was made for the Game Boy, Nintendo's original monochrome handheld.
Released in Japan in 1992, it was the first game in the Kirby series and the debut of Kirby himself. HAL Laboratory designed it as an approachable platformer for players who might find more demanding action games intimidating. Its five stages follow Kirby as he tries to recover Dream Land's stolen food and Sparkling Stars from King Dedede.
A common mix-up is confusing the original Game Boy release with later Kirby games on more powerful systems. Kirby's Adventure, the sequel in release order, appeared on the Nintendo Entertainment System and introduced Copy Abilities. Kirby's Dream Land 2 returned to the Game Boy in 1995 and added animal friends and the copy mechanic.
The Game Boy's limited display also explains why early artwork could be confusing: the system showed grayscale graphics, so North American marketing depicted Kirby as white, while Japanese artwork showed him as pink. The hardware, however, remains the same: the original game was a Game Boy title.
