Which Nintendo handheld hosted the original Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire games?

The story behind the answer

The original Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire games were released for the Game Boy Advance.

Ruby and Sapphire launched in Japan in 2002 and introduced the Hoenn region, a new cast of Pokémon, and the villainous teams Team Magma and Team Aqua. They were the first main-series Pokémon games designed specifically for Nintendo’s 32-bit handheld rather than the original Game Boy family.

The games added abilities, natures, double battles, Pokémon Contests, and visible weather effects. They also changed the way the Pokédex and game world were presented, giving the series a more colorful and technically ambitious look.

Ruby and Sapphire could not directly trade with the original Game Boy games because of differences in hardware and game systems. Later titles, including Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, provided a path for many older Pokémon to enter the new generation. The enhanced remake pair Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire was released for Nintendo 3DS in 2014.
