What type of Pokémon is Pikachu classified as in its official species description?

Pikachu is classified as the Mouse Pokémon in its official species description.

Pikachu is an Electric-type Pokémon known for storing electricity in the cheek pouches on its face. Its name, visual design, and electrical attacks made it a natural mascot for the franchise, especially after the anime paired it with Ash Ketchum.

“Mouse Pokémon” describes Pikachu’s species category, while Electric is its elemental type. These are different classifications, so “Electric Pokémon” is not the canonical species-category answer to this question.

Pikachu first appeared in the original Generation I games and is National Pokédex number 025. It evolves from Pichu when friendship is high and evolves into Raichu when exposed to a Thunder Stone, although the anime’s Pikachu famously chooses not to evolve.
